About This Book

We may properly ensure the quality of faculty work by distinguishing professional from unprofessional behavior, respecting the former and discouraging the latter. It is not possible to selectively ensure academic freedom for the most compelling cases if academic freedom, and the professional practices and habits of mind on which it rests, are eroded daily and celebrated only on Sunday. Academic freedom is the only atmosphere in which academic work can flourish. If we do not conserve and protect it, our daily work will be impaired, and we will falter when great tasks confront us. -- from back cover.
