Galina Kharyuchi's book "Sacred places in the traditional and modern culture of the Nenets" consideres the most important conceptions related to the topic of research, presents a classification of the holy places and a description of the ceremonies held there. The author examines the impact of various factors on the historical fate of the sanctuaries, describes the history of the social movement in defense of traditional shrines and authorities' actions for protection of the traditional territories and religious sites of the peoples of the North, including the Nenets living in the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous District. Sacred Sites of the Nenets perform ideological and social role, have some influence on people's attitude to nature and mutual relationship, represent the interests of large and small ethnic groups. As elements of traditional culture, old and modern, sanctuaries bear the greatest functional load. They are structural elements of contemporary religious practices. Nenets places of worship demonstrate ethnic stability of religious beliefs and rituals, particularly those practiced by families and communities for centuries.
