About This Book
Chinese scholars of the humanities and social sciences, some working in China and some in the west, explore the question of Chinese nationalism. Several show that it tends to be reactive to external provocations and threats, but others point out that it may also provoke anti-hegemonic nationalism from ethnopolitical groups within or on the verge of the People's Republic. They consider thematic issues in historical and current debates, the relationship between popular and state-fostered nationalism, and nation and ethnicity along China's inland and maritime frontiers.
