About This Book

The town of Lodeinoe Pole, northeast of St. Petersburg, has built an extraordinary collection of paintings, drawings, sculpture, and ceramics on the theme of the Nazi invasion of Russia. The catalogue is the first scholarly description of the collection (with additional works on the subject of the war from other museums); it reproduces 165 works, many not previously published. Some of the artists were actually working during the war; others created historical or legendary images from the late 1940s through the 1980s. Biographical sketches of forty-nine artists make the work a useful source on Soviet art. -- Summary written by John W. Emerich, Bronze Horseman Literary Agency.
