Papers from an international conference commemorating the 500th anniversary of the granting of Magdeburg Law to the city of Kiev. Included are welcoming speeches by Kiev mayor Oleksandr Omelchenko; the director of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation's office of cooperation in Ukraine, Winfried Schneider-Deters; and the director of the Magdeburg Law Municipal Reforms Foundation, Mykhailo Pozhyvanov. The second section includes eight papers on European legal tradition and the realization of home rule in Ukraine. The final section presents 12 papers from the history working group dealing with Magdeburg Law in Kiev through the centuries.
