The little French girl

This is a delicately written, rather unusual book about a French girl who is taken up by an affectionate upper-middle class English family, I think between the wars. She gradually comes to understand something about her mother which changes her position in and view of the world. I am vaguely related to the author, and will check the hardcover for a more precise account.
