About This Book
Soil erosion has caused widespread and serious damage in the southern Piedmont. Thousands of acres of good farm land have been stripped of their topsoil by sheet erosion or cut to pieces by advancing gullies. Fertile topsoil and, in recent years, subsoil from the bottoms of gullies have filled up stream channels and ponds, making swamps out of formerly productive bottom land and threatening the investments in large and small reservoirs. The problems created by this destructive process are recognized, and a comprehensive program of control is under way.
