About This Book

This index contains over 10,800 entries. It has been divided into three parts: (1) people and places, (2) Indians (about two pages), and (3) slaves (about 1/2 page).

Indian tribes living in the Cheraws Precinct include the Cheraw, Woccon, (an extinct tribe) and Catawba tribes. Addtitional tribes living in the area known as the Peedee include the Cherokee, Tuscarora, Yamassee, (Creek) and Muscoagee, (Lower Creek Muscogee) tribes.

The Cheraws Precinct covered the Northwest corner of the state of South Carolina, including the present-day counties of Chesterfield,] Marlboro and Darlington. The area known as the Peedee also encompassed the additional area now known as the modern-day counties of Georgetown, Florence, Williamburg and Horry.
