About This Book

The outcome of periodic meetings in Brazil and Argentina since 2010, this book, organized by Adrián Gorelik and Fernanda Arêas Peixoto, brings together researchers from eight countries and different specialties: anthropologists, historians, sociologists, literary critics, architects and urban planners. The inspiration for the book comes from the text by Richard Morse (1922-2001) "The 'Peripheral Cities as Cultural Arenas", in which the city is thought of as a place of germination, experimentation and cultural combat. The proposal made to the authors was to start from episodes of urban cultural life in Latin America in order to think about the relationships between city and culture and to rehearse an urban perspective for cultural history. This Brazilian edition, illustrated with photographs, maps and facsimiles, features a presentation written by Nabil Bonduki." (HKB Translation) --Verso Cover.
