About This Book
Isabel is a descendant of Jews who fled the Inquisition in the town of Belmonte in northern Portugal, a town that for centuries managed to secretly preserve its Jewishness and Jewish customs until it was discovered in 1917 by the Polish Jewish engineer Shmuel Schwartz. Isabel moves between two worlds: the closed world of the town and it is the modern world, outside. She moves to the capital Lisbon, studies literature and English at the university and teaches at one of the high schools in the city. Her grandmother, Gabriella, leaves Isabel an enigmatic legacy after her death, which her granddaughter will have to decipher on her way to her essence and roots. --
