The emerging role of private banks in the developing world

Bankers who have stepped up their cross-border lending in response to urgent financing needs in the developing countries and a decidedly soft loan market at home are being roundly lambased for excessive risk-taking. At best, this lending is thought to demonstrate imprudence; at worst, it is supposed to precipitate a domino series of defaults and bring down the world financial structure.
