About This Book
The author was a young Latvian woman deported twice to Siberia, first in 1941 with her two sisters, mother and grandmother, the latter two dying in Siberia, and again in 1946 with her father and sisters. Her father was originally sentenced to death which was commuted to 25 years hard labour. He was released after serving 10 years. The sisters were with him in Siberia 10 years, suffered privations and contracted tuberculosis. The author composed the MS on returning to Latvia in 1956 and died shortly afterwards. The book, a bitter memoir, published in 1978, was not welcome in the Soviet Union (which included Latvia until 1990) but widely circulated in the Latvian diaspora. The title expresses a wish to live.
