Museum in de oorlog

The Kunstmuseum will not be open until the war breaks out, but it is in danger of being demolished if the Atlantic Wall is built. Fortunately, that can be prevented, but the war years have had a huge impact on the museum. The building is being hit hard and the museum staff has to face many challenges in order to steer the collection through the war as best as possible. The museum has asked historical researcher Geert-Jan Mellink to research its own history during the occupation period. In addition, Lynne van Rhijn has investigated the effect of the liberation on experimental art in The Hague. With a small exhibition and a publication we celebrate 76 years of freedom and we reflect on the question of how the museum withstood the German occupation and how the museum and the art of The Hague bounced back in the years that followed. Het Kunstmuseum is nog niet zo lang open als de oorlog uitbreekt, maar toch dreigt het te worden gesloopt als de Atlantikwall wordt aangelegd. Gelukkig kan dat worden voorkomen, maar de oorlogsjaren hebben enorme impact op het museum. Het gebouw krijgt het zwaar te verduren en de museumstaf moet veel uitdagingen het hoofd bieden om de collectie zo goed mogelijk door de oorlog te loodsen. Het museum heeft historisch onderzoeker Geert-Jan Mellink gevraagd onderzoek te doen naar de eigen geschiedenis in de bezettingsperiode. Daarnaast heeft Lynne van Rhijn onderzocht welke uitwerking de bevrijding had op de experimentele kunst in Den Haag. Met een kleine tentoonstelling en een publicatie vieren we 76 jaar vrijheid en staan we stil bij de vraag hoe het museum de Duitse bezetting doorstond en hoe het museum en de Haagse kunst in de jaren daarna weer opveerden.
