About This Book

The collection of medieval ivory work of the Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt is one of the largest of its kind. It includes many prominent pieces like the fragment of a sky ride from the Hofschule Charles the Great, a relief from the so-called Magdeburg Antependium Emperor Otto I, the Byzantine box with the presentation of the Alexander legend and the Asturius-Buchdeckel from St. Martin in Liege. Most of the objects come from the Cabinet of Cologne scholar and collector Baron von Hüpsch. The collection and the catalog include a number of previously unshown Gothic ivory works.
