About This Book

The stories in this book have been put into the form of simple plays so that the children may have the added pleasure of acting what they read. Animal characters are always a delight to young children, and the choice of stories has, with one or two exceptions, been determined by this fact.
The vocabulary of The Golden Fish corresponds closely with that of The Pancake—the main reader for the Book Three Stage of Beacon Reading. The few words which the child may not be familiar with are listed on page 4 and should be taught as sight words. No new phonic work is included in the book. Children who need further practice on the phonic principles introduced at the Book Three Stage may get it from the Phonic Group Tables at the end of The Pancake while enjoying the fun of reading and acting the entirely fresh stories in The Golden Fish.
