About This Book

Sacrifice at Vicksburg is the story of three soldiers of the 23rd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry from their September 1862 enlistment to the end of their military service. After only a week's training, their army life started by chasing Braxton Bragg's army through Kentucky. They then went down river to Memphis, and with Grant through the swamps of Mississippi to Vicksburg.

Their participation in Grant's assaults and siege resulted in letters of unique value, showing Grant's success from an enlisted perspective.
