About This Book

A history of the Vera family, commissioned by Fernando Carlos Antonio de Vera y Figueroa, vizconde de Sierrabrava, to whom the work is dedicated and whose coat of arms appears on leaf 2 recto (1st count). Some authorities attribute authorship of this work to the vicecount's uncle, Fernando de Vera y Zúñiga, archbishop of Santo Domingo and bishop of Cuzco. It seems, however, that although the Vera family, especially Vera y Zúñiga, provided Puente with sources, Puente actually wrote the work. For a discussion of the issue of authorship see Gregorio de Santiago Vela, "Ensayo de una biblioteca ibero-americana de la Orden de San Agustín," vol. 8, p. 150-152.
