About This Book
I haven't met the book, but my two brothers attended Little Appley School at the beginning of the war. Richard and John Noakes. I joined Richard, [John having gone on to Aldenham School] in 1943, along with one other girl, Jill Few-Brown, whose brother was also a pupil. The school had been evacuated to the Wells House School in Malvern Wells, but it didn't work out very well and they had returned to Ryde. At the time I joined, there were only 23 pupils, down from 60 berore the war, as the Isle of Wight was embargoed for many, due to preparations for D-Day.
I had a fantastic education there. The head master, Kenneth Micheson was a gifted teacher of French and Latin, and Mr Mintoff of Maths. I was there for 5 terms and won a scholarship to the Cheltenham Ladies College from there, which was a bit of a culture shock at the time.
