About This Book

The work investigates the Greek tragedian Agathon (late 5th century BCE) and provides a critical commentary on the 34 surviving fragments of his work. Although Agathon's works were already largely forgotten in ancient times, he appears to have been a successful and forward-thinking dramatist. His key contribution to the history of theater was replacing the traditional choral parts with interludes completely unrelated to the content of the plot. The study deepens our understanding of the transformations taking place in Greek theater between the fifth and fourth centuries BCE.
