About This Book
The book explores the origin of the name and the notable names of geographical features of Severnaia Zemlia and outlines the history of their assignments and changes. Included are the Curricula vitae of polar researchers, scientists and explorers - from well-known to the undeservedly forgotten, whose names are now imprinted on the map of the archipelago, or disappeared without trace from it. A brief sketch of the history of discovery of the archipelago by the Hydrographic Expedition of the Arctic Ocean in 1913, shows the primary scientific expeditions, conducted of the archipelago in subsequent years. The book is illustrated with diagrams, maps, photographs, portraits, views of geographic features, research vessels, the individual moments of field work, etc., many of which have hitherto not been available to a wider audience. The book is intended for readers interested in the history of Polar Research of the Russian Arctic and toponymy.
