On Becoming Blind

"It is by long experience that the persons who live with a blind one learn to spare him difficulties with a devotion often admirable, a devotion I would like to help lesson.  I set forth in the pages which follow the results of my experience and researches ; I ask the indulgence of competent persons, for I am only parvenu in blindness" (Javal, 1904, p. ix).
