Outside the whale

'Outside the Whale', first produced in Edinburgh in 1976, is a fictional account of the writer George Orwell set in the early 1930s in which the action moves easily over a period of three years and in settings as varied as the basement warehouse of the publisher Victor Gollancz, a hen-hut in Essex and a doss-house in Romford.
