About This Book
More than 100 photographs by P. H. Polk (1898-1984) portray southern life in its many moods. Images include farmers working the cotton fields of Macon County, Alabama; studio portraits of middle-class African Americans; and scientist George Washington Carver at work in the lab and in the classroom. Polk was official photographer at Tuskegee University in Alabama for nearly 50 years and served as head of the school's photography department.
