About Spanish prisoners in Mauthausen who had fought against General Francisco Franco's Fascist forces in the Spanish Civil War and had escaped to France when the Republicans lost the war. When the Germans defeated France in 1940, they were interned by the French and then shipped to Mauthausen which was primarily a concentration camp for Communist political prisoners and German criminals.
