About This Book

This book is a very comprehensive "Outline of the History of Slovenian Art", written in Slovenian language by France Stele, on of the most outstanding Slovenian art historians from the early 20th century. First edition was published in 1923, reprinted 1966.
The aim of the book is to make an "Outline" (Slovenian: "Oris") of the development of style in art and architecture as seen in the lands inhabited mainly by Slovenians from the end of the early Middle Ages to the beginning of the 20th century.
One of the aims of the book is to analyze the works of art from Slovenia as a part of the European art history, searching for some specific, recognizable local characteristics that might lead to an affirmative definition of Slovenian art, being created through centuries long before Slovenia appeared on the stage of History as an independent country.
The chapters in the booklet (small paperback format, 170 pages of text, containing 146 b-w photos of buildings and artifacts) are as follows:
Forward, I. Art till Reformation, II. Reformation and the 17th century, III. Art of Baroque and Rococo, IV. The "Layer Style" and the Art in the 19th century, V. The "Slovenian Spirit" in the Art of the 19th and 20th century.
The booklet influenced many other works by the following generations of Slovenian art historians.
