The book is prefaced as follows :-
"In view of the interest awakened by articles on Shetland Family History which recently appeared in the Shetland News, and in response to many requests, the author and publishers have been induced to issue this volume. The various family pedigrees included in this book have been compiled from such of the Public Records relating to Shetland as are still extant. The author has in addition had the privilege of examining many documents in private hands. By the aid of these, together with much information furnished by many ladies and gentlemen, he has been enabled to complete this work ; and he now takes the opportunity to acknowledge the kind assistance he has received from Miss M.A. Cameron, Mr John Bruce of Sumburgh, Sir Arthur Nicolson, Mr Gilbert Goudie, Mr J.W.
