"Exploration of eight historians' writings finds they stress either Portuguese or Spanish (Río de la Plata) origins of the province. From 1920s-1960s historians tended to favor nationalist version of Portuguese roots, a Farrapos rebellion that was federalist rather than separatist, and a gaúcho cowboy-type of non-Hispanic identity.
