The work will focus only on chronic bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary ·disease (COPD) (emphysema alone or combined with chronic bronchitis), and probable obstructive pulmonary disease (POPD). Asthma- which is a problem more of children than of adults - is discussed in a separate volume on childhood diseases (Beck et al. , forthcoming). Chapter 2 of this volume presents definitions of chronic bronchitis, COPD, and POPD and discusses measurement issues that are important in this Study. In Chapter 3, we describe why these conditions were chosen for extensive investigation; we present data on the prevalence of these conditions in the country, on the morbidity and mortality associated with them, and on their response to medical care.
