About This Book

Paweł Bryliński was a 19th century Polish folk sculptor
working in the region of Southern Wielkopolska. The tall crosses
and pillars he carved from oak wood were richly decorated in a
folk-baroque style with the figures of the saints.
This book describes the historical and social changes which
influenced the rise of folk craftsmanship in the 19th century
and catalogues Brylinski’s sculptures. The concern of Australian
visitors for the survival of one of these remarkable monuments
has stimulated a revival of local interest in its preservation.
