About This Book
The millrace in Terrace House 2 at Ephesus is one of the most significant monuments for the history of engineering in the Late Antique and Early Byzantine periods. A total of seven water wheels powered a grain mill, and an additional water wheel powered a stone-sawing machine. Through the investigation of structural evidence, along with the analysis of coins, ceramics, and millstones, it has been possible to subdivide the complex findings into three successive phases. The excellent state of preservation of the millrace allows us to reconstruct the water wheels and to form some conclusions about the performance and production of the mill. This study places the millrace into the context of the Ephesian cityscape, and also compares it to other ancient mills.
