About This Book

In the summer of 1776, Thomas Anburey, a young lieutenant in the British Army, sailed form Cork to Quebec to serve under General John Burgoyne. For the next five years, Anburey carefully recorded his experiences and observations in a series of letters that were published in two volumes in 1789. In those letters, Anburey describes the colorful life of Quebec--its people and customs, its landscape, and wildlife. His account of military engagements is tempered by many personal glimpses into the lives of soldiers at war in a strange and forbidding land. In this book, the editor has taken the first volume of Anburey's letters and arranged the entries for modern readers.
