About This Book

This book describes a microchemical method for identifying organic unknowns by observing organic crystalline chemicals as they melt and also as they crystallize from the melt. It contains extensive tables on melting points of organic solids and describes several methods whereby unknown crystals are melted and reacted with known materials to form eutectic mixtures that have specific crystal structures that can be used for ID purposes. All observations are conducted under low power polarizing optical microscopes. Heating is generally done on microscope slides with a simple alcohol lamp.
