About This Book

In order to interpret biblical narratives, exegetes increasingly deploy methods of literary criticism, especially from the field of narratology. Due to the different approaches and terminologies, it is difficult to get a good grasp of current research. Sönke Finnern gives a systematic introduction to current interdisciplinary research in narratology and develops a comprehensive and detailed method for the analysis of narratives. Setting, plot, characters, perspective and reception of narratives are dealt with consistently from a cognitive point of view. The cognitive approach of asking "how should the recipient perceive the narrative" enables the integration of historical-critical questions. The categories of description established by the author are discussed using the text of Matthew 28 as an example. The author concludes his study with a proposal for a reorganization of methods in exegesis and in textual sciences in general.
