Political-social and technical-industrial development have influenced architecture and urban development since the 19th century and have effected constant renewal. In the environment of the 20th century the dominant social forces have come to the fore. The history of architecture and urban development since the end of the 19th century is not a linear development from historicism to modernism and post-modernism, but a consecutive and parallel development of quite different architectural and developmental concepts and implementation.

Die politisch-soziale und die technisch-industrielle Entwicklung prägen Architektur und Städtebau seit dem 19. Jahrhundert und bewirken ständige Erneuerung. In der gebauten Umwelt des 20. Jahrhunderts kommen die dominierenden gesellschaftlichen Kräfte zum Ausdruck. Die Geschichte von Architektur und Städtebau seit dem Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts ist keine lineare Entwicklung vom Historismus zur Moderne und Nachmoderne, sondern ein Nach- und Nebeneinander ganz unterschiedlicher architektonischer und städtebaulicher Ausformungen und Konzepte.
