The great Blasket

Ireland has a fine heritage of traditional culture and many strands of this culture endured longer on the Blasket Islands. Photography plays a major part in the storyrecording of this heritage. This collection catches the spirit of the island community, from the excitement of discovery in the late 19th century and early 20th, through the heydey of the 30s, the decline of the 40s and the legacy since 1953. Many of these photographs have never been seen in public and the view is that of the islanders and the people who witnessed their lives, up close and in person.
