About This Book

This describes the setting up and operation of a small house in south London for people (age range approx 19-23) with quite severe mental handicaps, who had been institutionalized for most of their lives. Barnardo's (a children's charity) set this up with a local health authority in the early 1980s. It's goal was allow these young people to live as independently as possible, and participate as fully as possible in the local community, in spite of their handicaps, enabled by full time staff.
