About This Book

"'Reflections & Refractions' has come together as a way of marking Gallery 44's 35th anniversary. Founded in 1979 by a small group of artists for the purpose of sharing a darkroom and studio space, G44 has expanded to support award-winning education and exhibition programming, and production facilities for nearly 350 members. As a way to mark the occasion, this publication is meant as a non-linear reading into some of the topics explored by the glelry's ever-evolving programming. The format of this publication is significant. As an artist-run centre, G44 is practiced at taking risks, at fostering programmatic adaptability and in realizing projectts that privilege experiment and dialogue. The publication is divided into three sections, in which each section brings together two artists whose work shares a common thread. In order to emphasize the conversational tone of much of our programming, each chapter features eight short essays by a wide range of international contributors, including artists, curators and writers. The contributors were selected by G44 and the artists and were invited to offer an object/image response."
