Grant McNaughton-Smith was born in Barrow-in-Furness, England. After obtaining his B.Sc. from Durham University in 1990 he worked with Prof. Richard Taylor at the University of East Anglia receiving his Ph.D. degree in 1994 for work related to the synthesis of medium ring lactones. During his term as a postdoctoral research fellow with Prof. S. Hanessian at the Université deMontréal, Canada, his research focused upon the synthesis of β-turn mimetics and prototypes for renin inhibitors.
