Biography
Mary Celestia Parler was born in [South Carolina](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Carolina "South Carolina") and worked for more than a quarter of a century as a researcher and professor of English and folklore at the [University of Arkansas in Fayetteville](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Arkansas "University of Arkansas"). She was a founder of the [Arkansas Folklore Society](https://encyclopediaofarkansas.net/entries/ozark-folklore-society-6239/ "Ozark Folklore Society, aka: Arkansas Folklore Society") and as director of the University of Arkansas Folklore Research Project she presided over the most extensive folklore research project in Arkansas history.
