Biography

George Frederick Zimmer was born in Francfurt, Germany in 1854. He followed his father into the profession of Civil Engineer. He became a naturalised Britsh Citizen after his arrival in London. (Census) He became interested in mining and industrialisation and particularly labour saving mecanisation of raw materials after the decimation of workforce caused by the 1914/18 war. His research led him to write many articles on moving and handling of materials in various publications and the need to bring together in one place information on the many devices in operation at the time.
In 1917 an extensive and detailed publication brought together from "Cassiers Engineering Monthly" March to December 1916 entitled "Mechanical Handling of Material" subtitled "Mechanical Handling of Material and its National Importance During and After the War" published by Crosby Lockwood and Son, Westminster.
Later his enquiring and orderly mind enabled him to collate a dictionary of Botanical Terms for the common man.
