Biography
Miles M. Jackson was born in Richmond, Virginia,April 28,1929. His undergraduate studies were completed at Virginia Union University in English and Sociology. He became in librarianship while an undergraduate student and decided to pursue a masters degree in library and information science at Drexel University. Later he enrolled in the Newhouse School of Communications at Syracuse University in the doctoral program in mass communication. He was employed at the Free Library of Philadelphia and in 1958 accepted a position as head librarian at Hampton University(1958-62); Government of American Samoa as librarian consultant(1962-64); Atlanta University as director of libaries (1964-69); and Professor of library and information studies at University of Hawaii(1975-1995.
He has travelled widely in Asia and the Pacific serving as a consultant for the Asia Foundation, U.S. State Department, US Information Services, United Board for Christian Education. His work took him to Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Micronesia, Pakistan, India, Taiwan, and Peoples Republic of China. He served as Dean of the School of Library and Information Studies at the University of Hawaii from 1982 to 1995. In 1968/69 he was a Senior Fulbright Visiting Professor at the University of Tehran;summer 1969 he was awarded a Ford Foundation travel grant to lecture in East and West Africa.
