Biography

Author, blogger, editor, and researcher with broad experience in the areas of science, technology, the environment, and the outdoors. My outdoor lifestyle and travel books include Back to the Bundu, Dirt Like Blood, Like a Bushman, Down to Africa, The Stone Apocalypse, A Life Outside, A Life Outside 2, A Life Outside 3, the Confessions of a Weekend Warrior series, and Boulderfest! In the environmental science and technology arena, I am the coauthor of Understanding Earth and Climate Change is a Geographic Problem as well the author of Our Techno-Environmental Future and numerous articles, blog posts, and presentations.

Matt Artz in RedlandsAs a GIS and science evangelist at Environmental Systems Research Institute (Esri) and a regular contributor to the Esri Insider blog, I communicate the value of using GIS technology to advance scientific understanding. I believe that technology fundamentally changes the relationship between man and the environment, and in that capacity am an evangelist for the concept of geodesign and contribute regularly to the Future Earth Institute blog.

Prior to joining Esri, I worked as an environmental scientist at a large science and engineering consulting company. My educational background includes an M.S. in Environmental Policy and Planning from Cal State Fullerton, a B.S. in Anthropology/Geography from Cal Poly, and a certificate in Marketing Management from University of Wisconsin-Madison.
