BIOGRAPHY/Arthur Henry Gunther III

Arthur Henry Gunther III, retired editor of the Editorial Pages, columnist and staff photographer of The Journal-News in Rockland County, New York, was with the newspaper for 42 years. He began his career there in 1964 in the mailroom and newsroom, eventually working his way to posts as photographer, writer and editor.

He wrote more than 6,000 pieces for the newspaper, including about 2,500 weekly columns. In 2006, a collection of those essays was published by The Historical Society of Rockland under the title, “The Column Rule.”

As a photographer with The Journal-News, he took more than 8,000 photographs. He continues to exhibit photographs at various galleries and to publish a web column at thecolumnrule.com.

A third-generation Rocklander, he lives in Blauvelt with his wife Lillian, a librarian. They have two sons, Arthur 4th, a schoolteacher, and Andrew, an information technologist.
