Biography
William Robert Scott was born in Northern Ireland. He earned his BA, MA, and DLitt from Trinity College in Dublin. He became a Research Fellow at the University of St Andrews, graduating DPhil in 1900, and was an assistant to the Professor of Moral Philosophy there from 1896-1901 and a lecturer in Political Economy from 1899. In 1915 he joined the faculty at the University of Glasgow as Adam Smith Professor of Political Economy, a position he held until his death in 1940. He was a prolific writer and an authority on the life and works of Adam Smith. He was President of the Royal Philosophical Society from 1931 to 1934 and of the Royal Economic Society from 1935-1937.
