Biography

Ludwig Tuman's published writings on the arts include several articles, among them "The Spiritual Role of Art," which received the Association for Bahá’í Studies’ Award for Excellence, and was published in The Bahá'í World, Vol XX. His article “Can Art for the Baha’i Faith Become Distinctive?” has been translated to German and published by the Association for Bahá'í Studies for German-Speaking Europe. His essay "Toward Critical Foundations for a World Culture of the Arts" (published in World Order magazine) was described by the late Daniel C. Jordan as a “seminal contribution.” His book, Mirror of the Divine: Art in the Bahá’í World Community, has been translated in Spain as Espejo de lo Divino. Three of his papers, including “Networking our Vision of the Core Concepts of Art” are published on the Rabbani Trust web site, as contributions to the Baha’i Social and Economic Development Conference, where he has been a keynote speaker. Other keynote presentations have included “The Role of the Artist in an Emerging World Order” at the former Landegg Academy in Switzerland, and "Fostering a Climate of Encouragement in the Arts" in the 2008 Wings to the Spirit Conference for the Arts in Pensacola Beach, Florida (available for downloading at no cost at www.wingstothespirit.org/wingslinks.cfm?linkcategoryID=6 .) He has also co-authored a booklet titled “Nine Steps to Raise and Nurture a Community Choir”, available for downloading at www.ludwigtuman.com . In addition to his services as a writer and speaker, Ludwig Tuman is by profession a composer, performing pianist, and producer. As a composer, he has written for varied media, including orchestra, chorus, chamber, and solo. His degrees in music composition are from Harvard (B.A. cum laude) and San Francisco State University (M.A.). He has extensive experience as a music educator and choral director. He has been a faculty member of the Chicago Conservatory College, where he designed and taught courses in composition, theory, and non-Western music. Having also had a professional production facility, where he created and produced music for television, he is currently active in music production.
