Er ist der letzte namentlich überlieferte Wissenschaftler an der großen Bibliothek von Alexandria im sogenannten „Museion“.
Seine bedeutendsten Arbeiten waren um 364 n. Chr. die Herausgabe der *„Stoicheia“* („Elemente“) von Euklid von Alexandria (um 360 v. Chr. – um 280 v. Chr.) und seine elf Bände umfassenden Kommentare zum *„Almagest“* (oder *„Mathēmatikē Syntaxis“*) von Claudius Ptolemäus (um 100 n. Chr. – um 175 n. Chr.).
Theon war der Vater der Mathematikerin und Philosophin Hypatia von Alexandria (um 355 n. Chr. – 415/416 n. Chr.).

His most important work were by 364 A.D. the publication of the *“Stoicheia”* (“Elements”) of Euclid of Alexandria (c. 360 B.C. – c. 280 B.C.) and his eleven volumes extensive comments on the *“Almagest”* (or *“Mathēmatikē Syntaxis”*) of Claudius Ptolemy (c. 100 A.D. – c. 175 A.D.).
Theon was the father of the mathematician and philosopher Hypatia of Alexandria (c. 355 A.D. – 415/416 A.D.).
