Biography

Antonio de Guadalupe López Portillo (1677–1745) was a Franciscan friar and Catholic bishop from Tepic* (Nayarit), New Spain (Mexico). He distinguished himself through study, missionary work, and service to the Church. After entering the Franciscan Order, he rose to the position of Commissary General of the Franciscan Orden in Rome where he gained recognition for his discipline and leadership. Pope Innocent XIII (1655-1724) appointed him (by a Bull issued in Rome, November 19, 1723) as Prince Assistant to the Papal Throne (a ceremonial title granted to distinguished prelates), his Domestic Prelate (a member of the papal household), and Guardian of the Holy Sepulchre in Rome (an honorary custodian of the chapel representing Christ’s tomb).

Appointed Bishop of Comayagua (Honduras), López Portillo dedicated his episcopacy to strengthening the missionary presence in Central America, supporting hospitals for the poor, and expanding charitable initiatives. He also encouraged education, founding and promoting institutions of learning, as well as establishing a music academy to cultivate the arts within the framework of religious and civic life. His efforts combined pastoral care with cultural advancement, leaving a legacy that connected faith, education, and social welfare.

He is remembered as a compassionate leader whose commitment to missionary service, education, and charity extended well beyond ecclesiastical boundaries, marking him as one of the notable figures of the Catholic Church in colonial Central America.

Note: *When contemporary biographies describe him as a native of Guadalajara, they are referring to the wider jurisdiction of the Diocese of Guadalajara, not necessarily the city itself (see: Dávila Garibi, José Ignacio, "Apuntes para la Historia de la Iglesia de Guadalajara", Siglo XVII, Vol. II, p. 680 / Lancaster-Jones, Ricardo; "Un Mexicano Ministro General de la Orden Franciscana", published in "Basílica" magazine, Issue 8, Number 89, October 1961, pp. 11-14).
