Henri Lemaître

Archivist, paleographer, and National librarian of France, Henri Lemaître was the grandson of a bookstore owner in Valenciennes. He studied 1899-1904 at the *Ecole des Chartes*, the French national school for archivists. While subsequently working on staff at the BNF, he frequently published articles and book reviews in the journal *Bibliothèque de l'école des chartes*. In later years he became active in international efforts, working with the International Library Federation, U.N.E.S.C.O. and others.
