Biography
Originally from Winnipeg, Manitoba and, after 40 years in Alberta, Jaroslaw (“Jerry”) Iwanus, a.k.a “The Prairie Maritimer” is proud to live au Coeur de l’Acadie, on the Northumberland coast in Pointe-Sapin, New Brunswick.
Jerry is a freelance writer who has done technical and expository writing for years and has recently added to his repertoire with poetry, essays, and reviews. He has eclectic writing interests, with particular focus on public policy in New Brunswick, the current situation in Ukraine, and the integration of Ukrainians into their new lives here in the Maritimes. He has a BA (Special) in history and an MA in Ukrainian history, both from the University of Alberta, and has served as a lecturer on Ukraine in the GNB Mosaïk program and in other public forums.
He has also worked as an independent public historian, proving the Alberta government with various reports pertaining to historic sites and other related projects throughout the Ukrainian settlement area in east central Alberta. In addition to that, he is a retired Accredited Appraiser, Canadian Institute (AACI, P. App.) with 20 years of valuation experience in private, public, and quasi-judicial spheres in Alberta and New Brunswick.
Outside of work, Jerry has served in various leadership roles over the years, including Mayor of Bawlf, AB, Senator with the University of Alberta, Treasurer of the New Brunswick Association of Real Estate Appraisers, junior high basketball coach, and as a member of the board or executive with numerous organizations.
